Carolyn Curtis
Ms. Curtis has worked domestically and internationally as a nurse and midwife for over 45 years, providing clinical midwifery services in both private and public settings mainly in Washington DC. She served as the Chief Midwife for a teen pregnancy program in Washington DC and later as the Director for the Division of Nurse Midwifery in Washington DC’s only public hospital, overseeing the expansion of midwifery services to eight community health centers.
Carolyn has been an adjunct faculty member at numerous Schools of Nursing including Howard University, Frontier School of Midwifery and Nursing, Case Western Reserve, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and the Charles Drew University. In 2002, she began her international health career as a Senior Technical Advisor overseeing activities in maternal and child health, family planning and postabortion care in over 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Her work in postabortion care (PAC) resulted in the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) to include postpartum and postabortion family planning as required skills for all midwifery programs in over 124 countries, adoption by The Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) for family their initiatives in over 46 countries and by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a key initiative in their FP2030 programming in over 80 countries. Besides clinical practice and teaching, Carolyn has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters in two books.
Carolyn has received numerous awards in the field of nursing and midwifery including Who’s Who in American Nursing (1994); Fellowship in the American College of Nurse Midwives (1995) , Who’s Who in Medicine and HealthCare (1999, 2002); One of 100 Extraordinary Nurses of the Year – Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society (2021); the Lifetime Visionary Award, American College of Nurse Midwives (2022); Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing, recognized as one of the top 1% of nurses in the world (2022), and WHO’s Who in America (2024).
Carolyn is Founder and CEO of the CARAB Company, an organization that provides education and technical assistance to individuals, organizations and educational institutions. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the American College of Nurse Midwives and Ethiopia Act, a nonprofit organization with programming in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
